Sustained disruption to global oil and gas supplies has driven rapid increases in energy prices, exposing the systemic risks of fossil fuel dependency and sharpening the urgency for grid expansion and electrification. Countries that invested early in renewables have been demonstrably more resilient: the EU’s 406 GW of solar and 246 GW of wind have enabled it to avoid an estimated EUR 58 billion in additional fossil fuel costs. Grid expansion and electrification are the structural solution to fossil fuel price volatility.
The Task Force brings together organisations from across the grid’s ecosystem including; Carbon Trust, UNEZA, RMI, WRI, RETA, G-PST, GCEP/IRENA, GGC/GRA, NREL/ETC, E3G, DESNZ and Transition Zero.
It is developing practical recommendations for governments, regulators and grid operators, covering actions across short-term, medium-term and longer-term timeframes. The Task Force agreed 13 priority grid interventions at its first meeting and is currently developing supporting case studies and evidence ahead of the report launch.
The findings will be published at the Coordinating Council event at London Climate Action Week on 23 June 2026, with the aim of securing broad endorsement from across the grids ecosystem and connecting recommendations with delivery through the Coordinating Council’s technical assistance model.
