Finance

The GGI Finance Working Group convenes international public and private financial institutions as well as infrastructure and climate finance experts to accelerate how climate finance can be mobilised to meet the large investments needed in grid infrastructure across emerging and developing economies. Recent work by the Finance Working Group aims to overcome challenges to financing grid investments in emerging economies:

Climate Finance Principles to Unlock Grids Financing

  • Currently only 30% of EMDE grid projects would be eligible for climate finance due to backward looking eligibility frameworks.
  • There is a lack of clear unified criteria for defining a “Green Grid” and the financial world remains divided on which grids qualify for climate finance.
  • The Climate Finance Principles for Green Grids provide a forward looking, methodology-neutral framework approach to assess the climate eligibility of grid investments.
  • GGI is working with key financial institutions to adopt the Principles and bring about a harmonised definition for what constitutes a “green grid” to unlock funding for these critical projects.
