GGI Asia-Pacific

Led in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the GGI Asia-Pacific Working Group accelerates prioritised continental and regional transmission grid programmes and projects in the Asia-Pacific region. By convening more than 100 members that represent a diverse set of actors and stakeholders including public and private finance institutions, multilateral development organisations, universities, nonprofits and developers, the GGI Asia-Pacific Working Group supports projects like Asean Power Grid, seeking to deliver on the following outcomes:

  • Open-Source and Accessible Transmission Modelling for Regional and Continental Routes: Integrating global and regional datasets in a coordinated framework allows country analysts to quickly model and assess key transmission routes without facing proprietary restrictions. In collaboration with the UK’s Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) team and their OSeMOSYS Global modelling tool, the GGI-APWG supports the creation of essential open-source datasets, transforming techno-economic and financial analysis into a public resource.
  • Resilient Grids: Supporting transmission grids that facilitate the expansion of renewable energy across the Asia-Pacific region, advancing universal access to reliable, modern energy services. This includes broadening digitalization efforts and leveraging new technologies to improve power system flexibility.
  • Enhanced Implementation Capacity: Providing access to financing, technical assistance, and collaborative research, design, and development (RD&D) resources accelerates the realisation of resilient grid initiatives. This approach is supported by enabling regulatory frameworks, electricity trading arrangements, innovative market designs, business models, financing tools, and power system strategies.
  • Sustained Political and Stakeholder Support: Achieving impactful outcomes that align with ESCAP’s power connectivity initiatives and ADB’s regional renewable energy integration projects. This approach prioritises collaboration among stakeholders and accelerates the execution of ongoing transmission grid integration projects, with a focus on avoiding duplicative efforts.
